Staggering in scale, yet boutique in nature The Londoner – the world’s first super boutique hotel has opened in the capital’s iconic Leicester Square.
This new luxury urban resort offers an exclusive, cosmopolitan playground for Londoners and guests alike to indulge in a collection of experiences including six concept eateries and bars, a wellness retreat, a private guest residence, cinema screening rooms and a beautiful ballroom.
To complement these experiences with an opulent atmosphere, material selection throughout the 16-storey hotel was critical to ensure the drama and elegance of West End life was reflected in the stunning aesthetics.
The natural beauty and versatility of SanFoot® Real Wood Veneer made it the perfect match for the super boutique hotel to achieve its high-quality finishes. SanFoot® has been featured throughout The Londoner including the welcoming reception area, relaxing spa area known as ‘The Retreat’, the decadent rooftop izakaya lounge named ‘The 8 at The Londoner’, guest room WCs
as well as corridor and lobby areas.
The endless design possibilities that this material has to offer enabled it to feature across such diverse spaces in the hotel. The same species of SanFoot® in White Oak, Flat Cut (7041) was used throughout so that the cut was consistent, and it was the application of custom stains that transformed the material in order to complement the design and surrounding aesthetics of the different environments.
Four custom stains were curated for this project, from a soft lighter tone to create the soothing tranquil atmosphere in the spa area to the dramatic darker tone to create a sleek contemporary look in the rooftop lounge.
As well as being visually stunning SanFoot® delivers on a wealth of performance driven criteria including the material’s aluminium layer which provides strength and structural stability making it suitable for high traffic impactful areas such as the hotel’s corridor and lobby areas.
This, along with being fire retardant as standard to Euroclass B-s1, d0, in accordance with EN13501- 1:2007, ensures critical fire-safety requirements of a busy public space have been met.
Environmental sustainability is in The Londoner’s DNA, achieving an ‘Excellent’ BREEAM rating. The sustainable credentials of SanFoot® Real Wood Veneer are another factor which made SanFoot® the material of choice for this project.
Our approach encompasses the Japanese Mottainai culture, an idea of respecting resources and not wasting them, along with an inherent recognition of their value.
To create the material, we use our technology of slicing thin veneer which enables us to maximise yields by approximately 300%. From an environmental perspective this slicing technology means that the same volume of real wood veneer that once came from three trees now only requires one, making it a more sustainable wood solution in comparison to traditional timber.
In a time where greater action is needed to make more sustainable choices, our Mottainai approach couldn’t be more relevant.
For an environmentally friendly wood solution that is simply stunning, think SanFoot® Real Wood Veneer for architecturally inspired interiors.
The importance of finding a perfect match in the quality of installation with the quality of SanFoot® Real Wood Veneer is key which is why we were proud to partner with our trusted installer Wells Interiors for this project where achieving a luxurious finish with the direct to drywall application was critical. The materials’ finesse was maintained, from atmospheric conditions to sequencing and the best results were achieved.
‘Inspired Surfaces are a breath of fresh air in the high-end wallcovering market.
The level of support and how they stand by SanFoot® Real Wood Veneer is second to none. The time, effort and money spent on the technical side of their product is their real special-sauce in my opinion and the result is a product that looks fantastic, and its versatility is limitless.’
